This Day’s Bookends

I began the day dressed in simple clothing while bringing bread, wine, and water to the altar to serve our new assistant pastor. I ended the day sporting a blue blazer, crisply ironed pants, and a loud pink Brooks Brothers tie while clutching a pretentious hors d’oeuvre and doing my best to smile jovially at people I hardly know.

Can you guess where I felt more joy, a deeper satisfaction, a firmer serenity—at Mass or at a society fund-raiser? Note to self: Start the day at Mass. End the day in peace and quiet. Pray in between.
